It’s not a secret that music is a powerful universal language. It can pump you up during workouts, inspire you before going into an important job interview. It can help you relax and reduce anxiety. In fact, music has been scientifically shown time and time again to calm the autonomic nervous system, the endocrine, and psychological stress response. Classical music and sounds of nature seem to be particularly effective.
But what happens when a group of scientists and musicians decide to create the most relaxing music by employing scientific principles? The British Academy of Sound Therapy set out to create the world’s most relaxing song. In collaboration with the Manchester band Marconi Union, the song “Weightless” was born.
According to the Mindlab Institution, this particular song can reduce blood pressure and decrease blood levels of cortisol (“the stress hormone”). The researchers saw a reduction in overall anxiety to be as much as 65 percent. The study also added in a few more tracks for comparison.
The research concluded these 10 tracks to be the most effective in reducing stress and anxiety.

Lyz Cooper, founder of the British Academy of Sound Therapy, explained the processes behind “Weightless.” It starts at 60 beats per minute and steadily slows down to 50, all the while your heart rate gradually matches the slowing beat. The intervals between notes produce a sense of relief, and unsystematic chimes prompt deeper relaxation. Finally, low sounds and hums reminiscent of Buddhist chants put you in a trance-like state. She added: “Sound therapy has been used for thousands of years to help people relax and improve health and well-being. Music was at the heart of healing and worship among indigenous cultures.”
The Dreampad team has been making music for therapeutic purposes for more than a decade. We create all Dreampad music in house, and we use frequencies, tempo and structure which are proven to be the most conducive to sleep and relaxation.
